Why do you look at the floor?

Awite bruv. I woz told I uzed wurds dat were 2 big nd sounded propa posh. Fort id street it up a bit yeh?!

It's been a long day. Of fitness, of duets, of delayed trains and a bit of street. It was good, especially the duets and the first bit of street at least...

Ever since I started dancing I've always had a problem with looking at the floor. I hated watching myself in the mirror in my very first class; simply because I couldn't do it. I've carried that with me though. It doesn't matter what I'm doing; whether it be street or contemporary I just cannot bring myself to look up, it must be ingrained in me by now.

Even with routines I know well; we have a simple street routine on Mondays that's being covered by another teacher for a couple of weeks. We finished it and she immediately called me out on it; "I don't mean to pick on you again," it's a recurring theme, "but you seem to look at the floor while you're doing it." During duets? "Look up." During Hollie's classes? "If you don't stop looking at the floor I'll lie there to put you off." It's a real downer, not least because I'm giving so much to trying to get the routines right anyway being constantly pulled up for something that's becoming harder and harder not to do knocks the confidence a bit more. It's a Catch 22; I look at the floor because I'm not confident enough to look up and make eye contact, but the longer I keep looking at the floor the more times I'm pulled up on it and the lower my confidence gets.

In other news I still can't attend the performance this weekend and I'm pretty gutted about it; I've worked really hard over the past 9 weeks on the routine with some awesome people and I won't even be able to go and watch. Still; there's the flashmob performance coming up at least...
